Just Breathe: Four Simple Ways to Come Back to Yourself
There's a particular kind of tired that has nothing to do with sleep. It's the tired that comes from a full inbox, a full calendar and a to-do list that seems to grow every time you cross something off. If that sounds like your week, I want to let you in on something I remind my clients (and myself) constantly: the calmest tool you own is already built in. It's your breath - and you're carrying it with you right now.
We don't often think of breathing as something we do. It just happens, quietly, in the background. But the way we breathe changes everything about how we feel. Under stress, breath gets shallow and quick, stuck high in the chest - a subtle signal to your body that something's wrong, even when nothing actually is. The techniques below work by gently reversing that signal, telling your nervous system it's safe to stand down.
None of these require an app, a class or a spare hour. Just a few quiet minutes and a willingness to slow down.
When your thoughts won't stop: The 7-11 Breath
Long, slow exhales are one of the quickest ways to calm an overactive mind - the longer the out-breath, the more it tells your body to relax.
Breathe in quietly through your nose for a count of 7.
Breathe out slowly through your mouth for a count of 11.
Repeat for 3 to 5 minutes.
I love pairing this one with scent. Warm a drop of your favourite Blossom and Essence rollerball between your palms, cup your hands over your nose and let that first inhale of lavender or chamomile set the tone.
When you need a clear head: Box Breathing
This one's brilliant before something that demands focus - a big meeting, a hard conversation or simply an afternoon where your brain feels three steps behind.
In through the nose for 4 counts.
Hold for 4.
Out through the mouth for 4.
Hold, empty, for 4.
Repeat for 4 rounds.
When sleep won't come: The 4-7-8 Breath
A favourite for winding down at the end of the day, this rhythm slows everything right down and makes a lovely addition to a bedtime routine.
In through the nose for 4 counts.
Hold for 7.
Out through the mouth with a soft "whoosh" for 8.
Repeat for 4 cycles.
For every day: Belly Breathing
Most of us breathe from the chest without ever noticing - a habit that keeps the body quietly on edge. Belly breathing brings things back down to where they should be.
One hand on your chest, one on your belly.
Breathe in through your nose, letting your belly rise while your chest stays still.
Breathe out slowly, feeling your belly fall.
Five minutes of this in the morning is enough to shift the tone of your whole day.
Making it a habit, not a chore.
You don't need a special setting for any of this - your desk, the kettle boiling, the school run pickup line. They all count. If you want to make it feel a little more like a ritual, try dimming the lights, lighting a candle or reaching for a scent that means "calm" to you. And if your mind wanders mid-count, that's not failure - just gently come back to the breath.
