The Blue Moon: A Rare Invitation to Pause, Reflect & Begin Again
31 May 2026
There are moments in nature that feel like a gentle tap on the shoulder - a quiet nudge to slow down, look up and remember that you are part of something much greater than your to-do list.
The Blue Moon rising on Sunday 31st May, is one of those moments.
This month, May has gifted us something rather special: two full moons. The first, our beautiful Flower Moon, graced the sky on the 1st, and now, on the final day of the month, we welcome the second - a Blue Moon - peaking at 9:45 am UK time and filling the night sky from dusk.
Despite its name, it won't appear blue. It will look just as luminous, just as round, just as quietly powerful as every full moon before it. And yet, something about its rarity makes it feel different. More sacred, perhaps. More worthy of our attention.
What Is a Blue Moon, Really?
A Blue Moon occurs when two full moons fall within the same calendar month - a phenomenon that happens only once every two to three years. It's where the phrase "once in a blue moon" comes from, first used in the 16th century to describe something wonderfully, almost impossibly rare.
This May's Blue Moon is also what astronomers call a Micromoon - the opposite of a Supermoon. It rises at the furthest point in its orbit from Earth, appearing ever so slightly smaller and quieter in the sky. There's something I find deeply beautiful about that. Not every moment of magic needs to be grand. Sometimes the most meaningful things arrive softly.
The Spiritual Significance of the Blue Moon
In holistic and lunar traditions, the Blue Moon carries a potent energy. Because it falls outside the usual rhythm, an extra moon, an unexpected gift, it's seen as a threshold moment. A rare opening.
Where a regular full moon invites us to release what no longer serves, the Blue Moon asks something deeper: What do you truly wish to call in? What have you been putting off? What is it finally time to begin?
Think of it as the universe offering you a second chance within the same breath. May began with one full moon and closes with another, bookending the month in lunar light, as if to say: everything that began on the 1st has the chance to complete, transform or deepen now.
A Blue Moon Ritual for Rare Beginnings
You don't need anything elaborate. The moon asks only for your presence.
What you'll need:
A quiet space, ideally outside or near a window where moonlight can reach you
A candle (gold or silver for the Blue Moon's energy of wisdom and rarity)
A crystal - Labradorite, Moonstone, or Lapis Lazuli work beautifully here
A piece of paper and a pen
Your favourite calming essential oil or diffuser blend
How to honour it:
Light your candle and diffuse your oil. Let the scent settle around you. Frankincense or Clary Sage are wonderful for this kind of reflective, threshold energy - grounding yet expansive.
Hold your crystal. Feel its weight in your hand. Breathe slowly and deeply, three times, releasing the busyness of the day.
Reflect on May. It began under moonlight and closes under moonlight. What unfolded for you this month? What surprised you? What grew?
Write your Blue Moon intention. Not a goal, an intention. Something that comes from the heart rather than the mind. Begin with: "On this rare moon, I choose to..."
Sit in the moonlight if you can. Even for just a few minutes. Let the light touch your face. Remember that the same moon has been lighting the sky for billions of years and tonight, it shines for you too.
Essential Oils for the Blue Moon
If you're looking to deepen your ritual with aromatherapy, here are some of my favourite oils for this kind of rare, reflective energy:
Frankincense - grounding, sacred, and deeply clarifying for the mind. Perfect for moments of intention-setting and inner stillness.
Bergamot - uplifting and heart-opening. If the idea of new beginnings feels a little daunting, Bergamot gently encourages courage and hope.
Sandalwood - deeply calming and spiritually connecting. Ideal for sitting quietly with the moon and simply being.
You'll find a selection of my handcrafted aromatherapy blends in the Blossom & Essence shop - each one made with intention, and perfect for rituals just like this one.
A Final Thought
Blue Moons don't follow the rules. They arrive when they're ready, outside the expected rhythm, unannounced and unhurried. Perhaps that's the greatest gift they offer: a reminder that life, too, moves in cycles we don't always anticipate. That extra chapters arrive. That rare, beautiful things are still possible.
So on Sunday evening, if the sky is clear, step outside. Look up. And let yourself feel, even for a moment, the quiet magic of something that only comes around once in a blue moon.
With love and lunar light,
Rachael
